From a two woman organization in the 80’s dedicated to rescuing death-due pound animals in 1981, Last Hope has grown into an organization of over 600 volunteers and supporters located in our Wantagh Adoption Center with both cats and dogs under one roof. Through its many programs, Last Hope is attempting to reduce the tremendous cat and dog overpopulation problem on Long Island, encourage responsible and economical pet ownership, and transform the public image of the typical pound animal. is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization that is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of death-due pound, stray and abandoned animals. is an approved 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, attempting to control the overpopulation problem on Long Island by spaying and neutering every cat, kitten, dog or puppy that they place prior to adoption and offering a low-cost spay/neuter program for feral cats.The organization has successfully campaigned for the mandatory spay/neuter of all animals in the Island's municipal shelters before being placed. In 2011, 20, Last Hope joined forces with Hempstead Town Shelter, inviting NY metropolitan area shelters to our “Bully Breed Brigade, spotlighting the potential of these often overlooked dogs. In 2008 Last Hope hosted a “Pit Bull Predicament Symposium” at Suffolk Community College, the first Long Island event of its kind to address the breed stigma and the plethora of Pit Bulls inside town shelters. In addition, Last Hope works with local shelters to transform the public’s image of the typical pound animal and to help municipal facilities enhance their own adoption policies. Since 2003, over 12,000 cats have been altered via Last Hope’s Fix-A-Feral vouchers. The organization assists the public in trapping feral cats while making the community aware of humane alternatives to the ubiquitous feral cat problem.

A Fix-A-Feral program and free Trap/ Neuter /Return clinics make it financially feasible for caretakers to spay/neuter feral cats they are feeding. Last Hope also hosts free rabies vaccine clinics. Determined to reduce pet overpopulation, Last Hope assists owners undergoing hard times with free spay/neuter for their pets.

In 2012, Last Hope placed 700 cats and 300 dogs in loving, responsible homes. Striving to “repair” and re-home abandoned and stray animals, Last Hope takes dogs in need from municipal shelters on Long Island as well as from impoverished rural shelters in Southern states, whereas cats come many local sources of distress.

Founded in 1981 by two visionaries, Last Hope Animal Rescue is a humane organization with a central Adoption Center in Wantagh, NY (and several satellite cat adoption centers in retail pet food stores) plus outreach programs manned by more than 500 volunteers throughout Long Island.
